What is liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic surgery, by means of which subcutaneous adipose tissueis permanently removed through negative pressure aspiration. The name of the procedure itself means absorbing (suction) and fat (lipo). “Liposuction yields excellent results because it removes excess fat from the body, together with fat cells”, says Dr. Borić, MD, PhD.
Experts at Imed Clinic point out that liposuction procedure, for men and women alike, is most often performed on the following body parts: face (double chin, neck), upper arms, stomach area, abdomen, hips, thighs, lower legs and buttocks. “Liposuction is not a method of treatment for excess weight or obesity, as it only allows the patient to get rid of fat that cannot otherwise be removed”, emphasises Dr. Borić, MD, PhD.
Liposuction is a procedure that involves the removal of unwanted fat that has accumulated in specific areas of the body. It is done using a cannula (tube) and other equipment for suction of fat. Doctors at Imed Clinic, headed by Dr. Borić, MD, PhD, say that liposuction is a good way of eliminating unwanted adipose tissue in the areas around hips, upper thighs, including accumulated fat around the waist and the inner part of the knee. Results of liposuction can vary, depending on the amount of eliminated fat and skin elasticity. Liposuction is a very safe procedure with a small risk of complications. First, an incision is made, then a cannula is inserted into it. Fluid is often injected into the area to reduce bleeding and pain. Fat is removed through a tube, by means of a suction nozzle that is located inside the cannula. Patients recover relatively quickly after liposuction; however, scars and swelling may last for 2 to 4 weeks. Depending on the surface area and type of liposuction performed, the entire procedure at Imed Clinic lasts for about two hours. Experts at Imed Clinic recommend that patients should wear compression or elastic garment after liposuction, in order to reduce swelling and help the skin to fit better to its new contours.
